Avarekh et Adonai (I shall bless the Lord) (Psalms 16, 7-11)
This part of the service is performed by solo singers who sing the verses of the Psalm in maqam Ajam and in other maqamat close to it in a free and improvisatory style, as in the petihot performed in the course of the event. At this point the congregation sings piyyutim in maqam Ajam which are not part of the Baqqashot repertoire. These piyyutim are known in the Jerusalem Sephardi and Syrian Jewish tradition as pizmonim (lit.: songs). They were usually composed at a later date, and are based on popular Arabic songs, melodies from Turkey or from other parts of the Middle East. The present recording includes: Avarekh - solo in free style; 1. Congregation: Melekh rahman (Arabic lahan: Dum ya zaman); 2. Congregation: Hodu na 'am emuna; solo singer in free style: Shiviti - Amut; 3. Congregation: Ronu shir hallel (Arabic lahan, Kan agmal yom by Muhammad Abdel Wahab; solo singers in free style: Lakhen; 4. Congregation: Hanun rahem (lahan: Madam Manana, a yet unidentified popular song).
