Rast

Author: Mordecai Abadi. This piyyut is sung to two lehanim with linking passages. The first lahan is sung to strophes 1, 2, 5, and 6. At the end of every strophe sung to this lahan a recurring melodic configuration is sung to the words Janam yalal (in Turkish); then the last two verses of the strophe are repeated. At the end of the first strophe the lahan of the taqtuqa Andama yati al-masa by Muhammad Abdel Wahab (1936) is sung. The end of the fifth strophe is sung to the lahan of an Arabic folksong Ya shadi el-alhan. The lahan itself contains five musical units, and is repeated twice in each strophe, with minor variations (units), performed by the solo singer in melismatic progression. Melodic structure: a-b-c-dc-e a-b-[s]-dc-e. The second lahan is sung to strophes 3 and 4. When this lahan is sung, the melodies added at the end of the first lahan are not performed. The structure of the second lahan is: f-g-h-i-j-k-l-h-i.
