Yom zeh le-Yisrael ora ve-simhah (This day to Israel is joy and happiness)

In the "Book of Baqqashot" this piyyut  is attributed to Rabbi Isaac Luria (the Holy Ar"i), but its real author was apparently a sixteenth century Hebrew poet from the Crimean Peninsula named Yitzhak Hendeli. The first and tenth strophes are sung by the whole congregation in the regular lahan. (The last strophe is not sung in this recording). The lahan consists of musical units which correspond to the verses of the strophes and of the introduction. The third verse of the introduction is repeated as refrain after each strophe. Each one of strophes 2-9 is sung to different lehanim. The lahan of the second strophe (Hemda ha-levavot) is by Ara Dinkjan, a contemporary American composer and 'ud virtuoso of Armenian origin that became famous in its Hebrew cover version first performed in the late 1980s by the popular mizrahi ("Israeli Oriental") singer Yoav Yitzhak (b. 1958), under the title Zeh ha-zman lisloah (This is the time to forgive). The third strophe (Qidashti) is sung to a Kurdish song, performed by a Turkish singer by the name of Ibrahim (according to Abraham Caspi). The fourth strophe (Le'isur mel'akhah) is performed to the lahan of an Arabic song by Farid el Atrash, Ya kofi bu'do, originally set to the piyyut Yah rof'i hodo as a contrafactum. The lahan of the fifth strophe (Veshir e'erokh lekha) is that of one of the most widespread songs in Ladino, Morenica, known in its Hebrew cover version as Sheharhoret yiqre'uni. The sixth strophe is sung to the lahan of the piyyut Eli 'amkha, which is also that of Farid el Atrash's song Dayman ma'ak. The lahan of the seventh strophe (Yish'akha kivinu) is that of the modern song Levad yoshevet (She sits alone) by the popular contemporary Israeli composer and singer Avihu Medina. The lahan of the eighth strophe (Ana 'elyon) is that of the widespread Ladino song known as La serena; and the ninth strophe (Hadesh miqdasheinu) is performed to the lahan of the piyyut Mah tatzitz kokhavi.
