11. La Borrachera de Amán

This stanza, detached from the copla La caída de Aman, is very popular as an independent lyrical unit. Its success is perhaps due to its humorous background: the wicked Haman is ridiculed, as, intoxicated during the royal banquets, he asks the children which section of the Pentateuch (parashah) is read that week. The children mock him by providing incorrect information.

When singing this copla, Moshe Cabilio did not remember the original text and therefore repeats the final two lines. Compare his recorded version:

Cuando Hamán se emburrachó     y salió afuera,
a los hijos demandó      que perashá era;
le dijeron: “va'era”,   que el Dio se apiade
              y a Hamán to mate,
que el Dio se apiade  y a Hamán lo mate.

Cuando Hamán se emburrachó    y salió afuera,
a los niños demandó    qué perashá era;
dijeron: "vaera,   vaera el Abraham";
         tenemos un Padre Rahmán
