On the occasion of the renewed interest on the opera “Esther de Carpentras” by French Jewish composer Darius Milhaud, the JMRC team has been exploring the liturgical musical tradition in which this giant musician of the twentieth century grew up and of which some of his family members were its carriers. The present project will introduce a cluster of sources about this almost forgotten tradition as well as the footprints it left on the music of Milhaud. Our first installment is a retranslated and annotated edition of Milhaud’s article about this liturgical tradition.
