Ester Davida and family (Tangier)
Yo me levantaría un lunes (6a)
This song is performed at weddings, although the text refers only allusively to the event. The opening may be read symbolically: the bride goes to the well for water with a jug in her hand (v.1-4); on the way she meets her beloved who attempts to seize her (v.5-8), and is mockingly rejected (v.9-18). In the concluding verses some wedding elements are mentioned, such as the bride's red girdle (kušaka morada) (v. 13-14), the dowry (v.15) and the jewels that the groom is to bring her (v.19, 21). The groom is joyfully mocked and teased by the bride (v.17-22).
