Falashas No More

Produced by Helen Marmor

In 1984 a vast operation, known as Operation Moses, brought thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. This film deals with the concrete absorption process of these immigrants and with the hardships that the immigrants encountered once in Israel, such as racism from other Jews who did not consider their ancient rituals to be Jewish. The film features two scenes with Ethiopian Jewish music. The first is of a child who chants in the language of Ge'ez, the liturgical language of Ethiopia into which the bible was translated. The second features a prayer sung in Amharic which is one of the colloquial languages of the country.
