13. Niggun of Devequt of Lubavich Hasidim
Habbad Youth Choir, conducted by Yosef Marton, Dedication of the Habbad Synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem, 2 January 1968; Yizhak Weinberg.
The Lubavich Hasidim refer to this niggun of devequt as "Der Poftover," after R. Yaakov Mordechai Bezpolov, Rabbi in the city of Poltava and a prominent Hasid in the time of R. Shmuel (1834-1882) and R. Shalom Ber (1860-1920) of Lubavich, who used to sing it during prayers (Zalmanoff, vol. I, no. 45). The version recorded here differs in some melodic and rhythmical details from that transcribed by Zalmanoff, but is similar to the published "Nichoach" recordings (Record no. 7, side B, no. 2). The Habbad Youth Choir was established as part of the Habbad youth movement's efforts to disseminate Habbad teachings. These efforts, summarized by the motto "U-farazta," meaning ''You shall spread out" (Gen. 28:14), consisted in holding meetings and lectures, inviting various circles of Israeli society to visit Kefar Habbad, and even holding public concerts. The choir has also taken part in the production of Habbad (Lubavich) records in Israel.
