Atah Ehad (“Thou Art One”), recited in the Sabbath Minhah service, is widely known through a familiar Ashkenazi melody that has become strongly identified with the text. Over time, this melody has been used not only for Atah Ehad itself, but also for other liturgical poems and devotional texts.
The present playlist brings together recordings in which different piyyutim are sung to the melody commonly associated with Atah Ehad. The examples illustrate how a well-known tune can be reused for new texts in a variety of communal settings, including a Yiddish song that incorporates the piyyut.
