22. The goose and her goslings

Sung by Miriam Levitin

This is one of the famous children's songs written by Yechiel Heilperin before the First World War, was composed by no less than three important Jewish composers within the span of a decade or so: David Nowakowsky (1841-1921) the legendary musical director of the great synagogue in Odessa; Abram Zwi Davidovitch in 1922; and Joel Engel, one of the founding fathers of the national school of Jewish music in Imperial Russia, in 1925 while already living in Tel Aviv. And yet, in spite of this supply of melodies, the melody in the version recorded by us and included in this disc is by an anonymous composer.
