Qaddish (Kadisch)

Haim Effendi

An example of an original, improvised melody applied by Ottoman ḥazzanim (synagogue cantors) to the opening Qaddish of the Sabbath morning service in order to set the makam of the Sabbath (makam Nikriz in the piece under discussion) or perhaps this is the ending Qaddish (Qaddish cantado, "sung Qaddish") that closed the meetings of the Maftirim choir in Edirne. Unlike any other recording of liturgical music by Haim Effendi, this one includes a "congregation" that performs the traditional responses.
