This romance about King David who is in anguish while expecting news from his son, Absalom, is based on a Biblical episode (2 Samuel 19: 1-5). A messenger brings David a signed letter, sealed with seven seals, with the news of Absalom’s death. He then calls to mourn, first his own wife, Absalom’s mother (in other versions, he also calls Absalom’s wife and children), and Absalom’s servants. All of them are told to dress in black and mourn his death. The first version is only a short fragment of this romance.
