8-11. El nacimiento de Abraham- version 2: La mujer de Terah

La mujer de Terah

Rosa Avzaradel-Alhadef (Rhodes)

This is another version of the copla about Terah’s wife’s pregnancy and the miraculous birth of Abraham. Like mythical heroes, baby Abraham speaks as soon as he is born (third strophe). This variant tells the story of Abraham’s birth and his growth as it appears in midrashic sources. Abraham ordered his mother to leave him in the cave. He was miraculously fed by angels for fifteen years until she came to look for him and found him already a young man. In a dialogue between young Abraham and his crying mother, he reveals that he is her son and orders her to tell Memron (Nimrod) that there is a God in heaven. The strophic text is structured (with some deviations) in mono-rhymed quartets.
