Moishe Oysher

Actor and Hazzan Moshe Oysher was born in Lipkon, Bessarabia in 1907. He immigrated to Canada in 1921, where he joined a traveling Yiddish theater company. In 1932, he founded a Yiddish theater troupe in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After managing the troupe for two years, Oysher decided to return to New York to pursue a career as a Hazzan. While officiating at the Rumanian Synagogue, he continued to act periodically. His best known roles were in the films The Cantor's Son (1937), The Singing Blacksmith (1938), and The Vilna Balabosl (1940). Throughout his career, Oysher made numerous recordings of both secular and liturgical music, collaborating on several occasions with Yiddish music greats, The Barry Sisters, and Abe Ellstein. Oysher passed away on November 27, 1958 in New Rochelle, New York at the age of 51.
