FOREVER IN OUR HOUSE
FOREVER IN OUR HOUSE
In varshtat (In the Workshop)

Lyrics by: Leib Jaffe (1876‒1948)

In varshtat

In varshtat, baym shayn fun a kheylevnem likht,
In shtoyb fun a hiltserner kamer,
In yeder fabrik vu di luft iz gedikht,
Vu s’falt vi a duner der hamer.

In varshtat baym shnayder, in kuznye baym shmid,
Baym shayn fun di funken vos flien,
Derheybt zikh a nayes, a freylekhes lid,
A lid vegn folk, vegn Tsien.

In varshtat baym shpindl, in kuznye baym shmid,
Es hert zikh fun libe un trayhayt
Tsum eygenem folk fun fargesenem glik,
A yid [lid] fun der yidisher frayhayt…

Es brent in di oygn a fayer…

In the Workshop

In the workshop, by the light of a tallow candle,
In the dust of a wooden room,
In every factory, where the air is thick,
Where the hammer falls like thunder.

In the tailor’s workshop, in the forges of blacksmiths,
By the glint of flying sparks,
Arises a new, a joyful song,
A song about the nation, about Zion.

In the workshop at spindles, in the forges of blacksmiths,
One hears of love and devotion
To one’s own people of forgotten good fortune,
A song of Jewish freedom…

The song rises stronger and stronger,
The people breathe heartily and freely.
Their tired and bent bodies straighten themselves up,
A fire burns in their eyes…
