A sense of joy is also central to the Lubavitch religious experience. There is a great need amongst the Hassidim to relax after performing niggunim of deeply religious nature and to make way for light-hearted niggunim. "Ech du" is a joyous niggun of Unkrainian character. The meaningless syllables "Ech du di din dai do" have been carefully preserved. That most dance tunes have no text, but rather sung to a kind of "scat singing," reveal their origins in instrumental repertoires. Eitan Kirsch's version emphasizes the playfulness of the niggun as he adds jazz-like improvisations.
