A mourning song in romance form. The plot concerns Huerco, a personification of Death, who comes to fetch the king. This Angel of Death carries on two lengthy discussions: first with the palace guard (v. 5- 30), and then with the king (v. 43- 82). Introducing the Angel of Death to the king, the guard describes the terrifying guest (v. 33-36). The king tries in vain to postpone the moment of death. He invites his deadly visitor to sit on his throne and wear his crown (v. 37-42) but he refuses (v. 43-46); he arranges the future of his family (v, 47-54); and he asks his friends to mourn for him (v. 55-58). The angel of Death first darkens the king's eyes (v. 63-64). The king asks his mother for glasses (v. 65-68) but the Huerco says that it is in vain (v. 71-74). Nothing can prevent his soul being taken away before sunrise (v. 81-82).
