Journal of Jewish Music and Liturgy
Giovanni Maria, an excellent flutist, was part of a small group of Jewish musicians in the court of Pope Leo X. Salamone Rossi (1570-ca. 1630) made significant contributions to vocal music. Other Jewish Italian musicians included the violinist Giulio Terni and the soprano Giuditta Pasta (1797-1865). Michele Andrea Agniello Costa (1806-84) studied at the Royal Conservatory in Naple and eventually was appointed music director at the Kingws Theatre in London. His brother, Carlo Costa (1826-88), studied with Mercadante.
