R. Abraham Ibn  Musa

The author of this piyyut for the festival of Shavout was R. Abraham Ibn Musa of Tunisia (c. 5420/1660-5493/1733), Torah commentator, kabbalist, and paytan. It is sung by Moroccan Jews during the joyous celebrations of the giving of the Torah. The variegated colors of the orchestra are gradually introduced around this clear, optimistic melody, of the Rasd-dhil nuba. The orchestral voices blend together to create a uniquely textured variation on a classic North African-Mizrahi ensemble, integrating a jazz-style wind section and a string quintet. This piece serves as a greeting, introducing the entire composition. In it, the artists give thanks for the opportunity to come together and create, and to "receive Torah" from the depths of the communal and individual musical memory of R. Haim Louk.
