The philosopher and translator Qalonimus was born in Arles in 1286. Among the scientific and philosophical works that he translated from Arabic is also the book of Abu Nasr al Farabi titled “Kitab Ihsa al- ulum” the book of sciences. Music appears in the third chapter of this book dedicated to the sciences as part of the mathematical sciences. In this chapter Al Farabi defines the different branches of music. He completely separated practical music and theoretical music. The articles includes details on Al Farabi’s article, the different translations and the existing manuscripts of Qalonimus.
