Rita Flomenboim - Biography

Rita Flomenboim, musicologist and music theoretician. Born in Chernovitz, USSR. Graduated at Musicesku Academy in Kishinev, later she was a faculty member there. Lives in Israel since 1974. Faculty member of the Samuel Rubin Academy of Music and Department of Musicology at the Tel Aviv University, as well as at Levinsky College Education, Institute for Music Education.

Ph.D. graduate in Bar Ilan University. Researching the field of Jewish Art Music since 1983. Participated in various conferences and congresses on Jewish Music.

Ph.D, University of Pennsylvania, 1989. Research interests: music context (art, social and cultural history); modernism; Bela Bartok; analysis of form, influence, and rhythm; typology and analysis of melody; modality and rhythm; music and ritual; East-European folk music; and Jewish liturgical music (especially Eastern Europe). Her main research interest is the liturgical chant of the East Asheknazi Jews, a project she has begun over twenty years ago.

Currently working on genres of South-German chant based on MS of Maier Levi for publication in the JMRC Yuval Music Series.
