Leo Wiener

Leo Wiener was born in Bialystok, Russian Empire in 1862. He was an American historian, linguist, author and translator. Wiener lectured on Slavic cultures at Harvard University and became the first American professor of Slavic literature. One of his many published books include, Africa and the discovery of America Vols. I-III (1922).

Weiner translated Yiddish songs and poems. The poet he valued most was Maurice Rosenfeld and he introduced him to the world by translating his poems and essays into English. 

He died in 1939 in Belmont, MA.
