Israel Prize awarded to JMRC director Prof. Edwin Seroussi

Jewish Music Research Centre director, Professor Edwin Seroussi, will be awarded the Israeli Prize for his decades of research on Sephardic and Mizrahi music, it was announced this week. The Israel Prize, considered Israel's highest civilian honor and granted in a state ceremony in Jerusalem each Independence Day, was awarded to Prof. Seroussi in the category of cultural, art and music studies. Education Minister Naftali Bennett, when making the announcement, noted that one of the professor's main research areas, the music and religious poetry of the eastern Jews, has not been "sufficiently expressed" in the past and that acknowledgement of Prof. Seroussi's contributions was a part of "telling the complete Jewish story, east and west."
