A survey of the history of Jewish music from 2000 BC to the present. The book puts the music into a context of Jewish history, philosophy, and sociology. It examines the nature of folk and liturgical music in the three major Diaspora communities that evolved over centuries after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Several chapters discuss popular music in Israel and America and its impact on Jews and their musical identities. Contains some 175 musical examples, and an accompanying CD with 65 tracks.
