Salcia Weinberg - Biography

Salcia Weinberg (Shure Licht) was born in 1878 in Przemysl, Austro-Hungarian Galicia. Like Prager, Kalish and Zwiebel-Goldstein, she too began her career in the choir of the Polish Theater in Lemberg, later switching to Gimpel’s Yiddish Theater.

Weinberg later left the theater and traveled with a Yiddish variety show through Bulgaria, Hungary and Germany, returning to the Yiddish theater and playing for a short time prima donna roles.

Joshua Weisser (Pilderwasser) - Biography

Joshua Samuel Weisser (Pilderwasser) was born in 1888 in Novaya Ushitsa, Ukraine. As a child, Weisser was exposed to the tradition of Hassidic melodies and Hebrew zemirot through his father Aba Pilderwasser. Weisser began his formal musical education with the local hazzan of Novata Ushitsa, who taught him solfege and sight singing. He participated in many local synagogue choirs, studying under notable chazzanim such as Eliezer Gerovich.

Bessie Weissman - Biography

Bessie Weissman (Bain) was born into a Yiddish theater family in New York and became the daughter-in-law of playwright Anshel Schorr. She played child and adult roles with a number of the great actors, including Bertha Kalish, Jacob P. Adler (1855–1926), David Kessler (1860–1920) and Maurice Schwartz (1890–1960), and later partnered with the comic singing star Aaron Lebedeff (1873–1960).
